FAQ
What is the process of buying granite countertops?
Most people have never bought granite so the process can be a little confusing. Below is our system to help customers proceed with as much knowledge as possible.
-
Contact us to set up an appointment at the showroom to look at color options. Appointments are not necessary but are recommended for new customers. We have 4 slab and tile distributor showrooms in DFW so we will suggest the closest one to your home or office. There are over 400 colors to choose from so come prepared with comfortable shoes. Many customers take 30 minutes while others take several months. It's completely up to you. We will take as much time as you need. The first place to start though is color selection.
-
Once colors are selected we will set up a time to visit you at your home to measure and give you an exact price. This is all done at no charge and is often done the same day as the showroom appointment.
-
At the time of the home measure we will discuss the sink options, whether or not you will be changing any appliances and the specific details of your expectations. We will also discuss drop in sinks versus under mount sinks.
-
Once you have given us the OK to proceed with the fabrication and installation of your kitchen and/or bath, we will set up a time to template your existing countertops or cabinets.
-
From the time of template, it usually takes 7-10 business days to install the granite. We will give you an install date at the time of template.
-
On the day of installation, we will remove your existing countertops and install the granite. We remove the sink and stove top so at this point there is no need for a plumber or electrician. The day that we install the granite we will need your new stove top (or your previous stove top) and we will need any new appliances such as a drop in sink and faucet. This will all be discussed prior to our arrival.
-
One to two days after we install the granite, we will begin your backsplash. This usually takes 2 days but it can extend into 3. It will depend on the design and materials that you select as well as whether or not we need to replace any sheetrock. Rest assured, you will know the schedule as we are going through the process. The plumber and/or electrician will usually follow the backsplash crew by 1 day.
-
Once the backsplash and granite countertops are complete, we suggest that you replace the air filters in your home and then ENJOY! We will have already sealed the countertops, and we will have given you instructions on the care and cleaning of your new granite countertops. We can also e-mail them to you so that you can keep an electronic copy. Taking care of granite is very simple.
How much does granite cost?
Granite can start as low as $40 per square foot and go as high as your imagination and/or budget allows. Most of our customers spend an average of about $60 per square foot. To give you a reference many laminate countertops can cost $40 per square foot. The average kitchen in most homes is 70 square foot. Our average kitchen remodel (including new backsplash) is between $5500 and $6,000.
How do I know how many square feet I have?
Measure the length of your countertops by placing the tape measure at the back of your countertops, then measure the width, multiply the length and width in inches and divide it by 144. Or, contact us and we will be happy to come to your home and measure.
What about my backsplash? Do I need to replace it at the same time?
Most of the time, customers will choose to replace their existing backsplash with a more updated look and with something that will tie in with the granite countertops.
How much will new backsplash cost?
Most customers spend an average of $1100 for new backsplash. There are countless materials and designs that we can create for you. We will be happy to give you a design consultation once we have visited with you. Many customers select the backsplash material and design at the same time they select the granite colors.
Where do I select granite colors? Where do I start?
If we meet you for the first time at your home instead of the showroom, we will have sample boards of colors that may help to give you a few ideas. Magazines are great for generating a few ideas as well. We do not recommend selecting your color off of a sample. When you see the slabs you'll know why! Slabs are large pieces of granite; they range in size from small 90†X 50†and go up to large 120†X 70â€. Take a peek at our gallery page and you can see slabs at the warehouse.
Can I cut on my granite countertop?
Granite is harder than your knife blades and will dull them very quickly. We have many customers request a cutting board out of their sink and/or stove cut. We find that most customers end up either throwing them away or using them as coasters. We recommend cutting and chopping on a wooden or plastic cutting board.
What exactly is granite and where does it come from?
Igneous Rock ~ (Granite) is formed by the cooling down and solidification of molten magmas and lava. As they cool, crystals form and grow upon one another until the entire molten body has turned to stone. This group of rock was the first to form on the planet and today makes up 95% of the earth's crust. It is quarried from all over the world including Brazil, China, Italy, India, North America, and many other regions.
